Ice Maker Not Working? Try These Steps First

An ice maker that suddenly stops working is often an easy fix. Before assuming the worst, run through these quick checks.

Check the Water Supply

Make sure the water line behind the fridge is fully open. A partially closed valve can slow or stop ice production entirely.

Check the Freezer Temperature

Ice makers usually need the freezer at 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit to work properly. A freezer running too warm will make little or no ice.

Check the Water Filter

A clogged water filter restricts flow to the ice maker. If it's been more than six months, try replacing it.

Listen for the Fill Valve

When the ice maker cycles, you should hear a brief buzz or hum as water fills the mold. Silence during this step often points to a stuck valve.

Look for a Frozen Fill Tube

Sometimes the small tube that fills the ice mold freezes shut. A hair dryer on low, held a safe distance away, can sometimes clear it.

If these checks don't solve it, the ice maker module, valve, or wiring may need professional attention.
