Why Is My Washer Shaking? Common Causes and Fixes

A washer that shakes and bangs during the spin cycle is more than annoying, it can walk itself across the floor or damage nearby cabinets. Most shaking comes down to one of a handful of common causes.

An Unbalanced Load

A single heavy item, like a comforter, can throw off the balance of the whole drum. Try rearranging the load evenly before assuming something is broken.

Shipping Bolts Still Installed

New washers ship with bolts that lock the drum in place for transport. If these were never removed, the machine cannot absorb normal movement and will shake violently.

Worn Suspension Springs or Shocks

Over time, the springs or shock absorbers that cushion the drum wear out, letting the drum swing too far during the spin cycle.

An Uneven Floor

Even a well-built washer will rock if it's not sitting level. Check that all four feet are adjusted and firmly touching the floor.

A Failing Suspension Rod or Bearing

On some models, a broken suspension rod or a worn drum bearing can cause serious shaking that gets worse over time.

When to Call a Technician

If rearranging the load and leveling the machine doesn't help, the suspension system likely needs a closer look from someone who can safely access the drum.
